Looking to enhance your movie experience? If you answered yes, you are in luck. San Luis Obispo is home to three very unique independent theaters: the Fremont Theater, the Palm Theater, and the Sunset Drive-In Theater. Check out what these theaters have to offer.
THE FREMONT THEATER
Want to experience history? Head to the Fremont Theater. This historic art deco theater is located in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. Built in the 1940s, the Fremont Theater is San Luis Obispo's grand dame with its iconic neon marquis and rich interior.
THE PALM THEATER
If you prefer indie and foreign films over Hollywood Blockbusters, check out the Palm Theater. It is the first solar-powered theater in the U.S. Don't be put off by the modest exterior of the building. Inside, this theater has a cool vibe that will appeal to your more artsy side. Local art and painted wall murals are showcased throughout the theater.
With its three solar-powered silver screens, the Palm Theater offers some great college film selections. It also manages to keep prices reasonable. Where else could you go and get your own personal popcorn with real butter for a buck?
THE SUNSET DRIVE-IN THEATER
If you enjoy watching your movies al fresco style, grab your pillows and blankets and head to the Sunset Drive-In for a double feature. This drive-in theater has been operating since the 1950s and has been voted one of the best drive-in theaters in the U.S.
With over 500 parking spots, you can watch the latest Hollywood Blockbusters from your car. Better yet, grab your lawn chairs and sit under the stars. Snacks are available at the concessions or you can bring your own and save a couple dollars. This is Americana at its best, an experience not to be missed!
