Explore Coastal Hiking Trails in San Luis Obispo

Hiking is a great way to do low-impact exercise and explore the natural environment. With summer quickly approaching, staying outside in high temperatures and the hot sun may not be comfortable for everyone. Luckily, San Luis Obispo has many short hiking trails along the coast that will satisfy your desire to be in nature, but not keep you outside all day. Check out these picturesque walking trails and stay cool with the ocean breeze.

Cave Landing

At the end of Cave Landing Road in Avila Beach you will find the trailhead for this short walk. Only a half-mile round trip, the flat Cave Landing Trail has stunning coastal views the whole way, and ends at a natural rock arch called Pirate's Cave. Take 15 minutes to walk to this attraction and stay to swim and relax at the nearby beaches.

Hazard Canyon Reef Trail

Another short hike of just one mile, this walk in Montaña de Oro State Park takes you down to a shoreline full of rocky tide pools. You can find the Hazard Reef Trail on Pecho Valley Road, north of the state park's visitor center. Walk for about 30 minutes to this rocky point and you can discover what life exists in the pools and spend time on the neighboring sandy beach.

Moonstone Beach Boardwalk

In the northern part of San Luis Obispo County you can relax on this flat, three mile trail and boardwalk. The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk Trail starts from a parking area near El Colibri Hotel. A combination of scenic overlooks, soft sand, and wooden boardwalks, this tranquil coastal walk provides great rewards for little effort.
